Child Education: Military Academies For Boys
23. June 2008
admin
Some of the most affluent and well-to-do students in the United States attend all-boys military academies. Many of these schools have 100 or more years of history behind them and have been producing the cream of the crop for many years. The average SAT score of students attending military academies is over 1100; your typical everyday student does not attend these schools.
Preparing the Leaders of Tomorrow
The focus of an all-boys military academy is college preparatory studies. These schools are designed to train the next generation of leaders for the U.S. They are quite different than public schools for many reasons, but one notable reason is the cost to attend. Public education does not have a fee outside of taxes, but military academies average over $30,000 per student.
Another interesting fact about military academies for boys is the student to teacher ratio. On a national average, it is one teacher for every six students. This number is very good compared to many large public school systems where the average can be one teacher for every 10, 20, or even 30 students.
Many of these schools give parents an option to have their teens live at the school while they are attending, much like college. Even though nearly all of the schools offer boarding for their students, it is not necessary at all of the schools. Many of the schools are beginning to offer day classes just like regular public schools.

Child Education: Teen Self-esteem
22. June 2008
admin
What is self-esteem? The old-fashioned dictionary defines self-esteem as having respect or pride for oneself. There is always a percentage of teenagers who have very low self-esteem. The question is, then, what can be done to help these troubled teens.
Low Self-Esteem Causes
Self-esteem for a teenager can be problematic because of a number of different factors. One factor could be the teenagers family life. The father, especially, can play a significant factor as to whether or not a teenager has strong self-esteem. If the father is absent frequently or not in good standing with the child, children can often have self-esteem troubles.
Another potential cause for low self-esteem is with the unrealistic expectations teenagers often have for themselves. These unrealistic expectations can come from real or perceived pressure from family, friends, or society in general. Society has set unreasonable expectations for all of us, including teenagers. Messages of excess and narcissism are constantly paraded in front of them, causing them to wonder who they really are (or should be).
A persons self-esteem is often raised once he or she is around individuals who are encouraging and loving. These time-tested techniques have cured many people from the woes of low self-esteem. If your child is having problems with how she feels about herself, spending more time with her and communicating with her more often is all that may be needed to help the situation.

Child Education: Teen Mental Health
21. June 2008
admin
What is the status of your teenagers mental health? This may not be a question you ask yourself on a daily basis, but for parents who are having trouble with their teenagers, the status of your teens mental health may be something to think about. Your teens mental health is how he or she thinks, feels, and reacts to lifes situations.
If your teenager has suffered a traumatic loss of a loved one, gone through a parental divorce, or has dealt with other stressful issues, your teenager may have some mental health problems. A teens mental health can affect the way they look at themselves, their future, and even the way they look at other peoples lives. Thankfully, there are some warning signs parents can watch out for when mental health problems arise in their teen.
Mental Health Warning Signs
The list of warning signs tends to be long, depending on what research you read, but some common warning signs are chronic sadness, anger and frequent crying, guilty feelings, anxiety, and unfounded fears. Teenagers of all walks of life may exhibit these traits at one time or another during adolescence, but the teens who deal with these issues for months on end are the ones we need to worry about. A teen who is having a bad day or bad week may not need medication or therapy, but the one who has been struggling for six months or more may.
Many governmental or nonprofit organizations can offer online resources that parents can download regarding teen mental health. Local community organizations that deal with teens and mental health disorders can offer great advice on how to handle your particular situation. It is encouraging to see so many different organizations that care about the well-being of our teenagers.

Child Education: Tutoring Services
20. June 2008
admin
If you or your child is in need of additional academic help, tutoring services are a proven method of instruction. What they provide is an alternative environment which is conducive to learning. Tutorial help comes in many forms, so it is easy to find what you are looking for, in terms of learning curricula. For one, there is help with reading improvement, both in the fields of speed and accuracy. There is also help that is targeted to individual parts of mathematics and science, like algebra and biology.
Why do tutoring return such noticeable results? The reason is surprisingly simple: they offer one-on-one instruction, as opposed to a large classroom setting, which is sometimes impersonal. Public and private education is structured in a classroom environment because that is the best way to provide instruction to the largest number of people. There is a lot of talk about classroom sizes, and indeed this is important.
Tutoring Services Make Learning Comfortable
Despite the size of the class, some students just dont feel comfortable in a larger environment. This does by no means indicate that they are not as disposed to learning as other students. It just means that they need additional environments in which to learn and thrive. This is where tutoring services come in.
Good tutors know not just the subject of their academic expertise, but also flexibility. An effective tutor must be able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of his or her student. In this way, they can provide instruction in a way that is encouraging to the student. This is an important facet of tutoring services.
Tutoring Services Provide Understanding
At first, some students might put up an emotional wall between themselves and their tutors. It is difficult to admit to oneself that additional help is needed, especially when it seems to come so easily to classmates. But, once that gap is bridged, real tutorial learning can begin. It is the job of both the tutor and the student to come to a mutual understanding.
The pace of tutored instruction depends on varying learning styles. Not all students respond to authoritarian instruction. Some need a rigid learning structure, while others need a more flexible environment. Before a tutor is chosen, a screening interview will allow the client (or clients parents) to ask questions of the tutor in order to get a feel for his or her personality and communication style.
Choosing the Right Tutoring Services
If youre looking to hire a tutor, be a good judge of character. If you dont get a good feeling from a prospective tutor, trust your instincts. A lot of times, clients who need tutoring for themselves or their children rely too heavily on a tutors accomplishments, and not enough on their compatibility. Every student is different, and what works for one might not work for the other.
Be mindful of your childs individuality. For instance, if your child is resistant to authority and is rebellious at times, he or she might clash with a tutor whose motto is, My way or the highway. These events are rare, but it is extremely important to screen prospective tutors before they are given the task of educating someone close to you.

Child Education: Algebra Help
19. June 2008
admin
Who hasnt needed algebra help at least once in their life? All those with their hands raised, put them down. The mere mention of this difficult but necessary mathematical practice sends middle and high school students into a frenzied panic. But wait, help is out there!
Algebra is a discipline that requires a different method of thinking than is inherent to most people. It is an abstract science, and that is the biggest impediment to understanding it for many students. It is perfectly natural to need additional algebra help, because by nature abstraction is difficult to understand. Unfortunately, it is also essential, so it must be learned.
Getting Algebra Help is Easy
Tutorial services excel at helping the algebra student get over that mental hump. Timely learning of algebra is necessary, because virtually all higher mathematical disciplines are based on it. Without algebra, there is no calculus, differential equations, or engineering.
If your child is exhibiting algebra anxiety, find a good tutor. He or she can easily remedy the problem because sessions will be in the format of one-on-one targeted instruction. Many students are afraid to raise their hands in class because they think theyll ask stupid questions. This fear is less of an issue in a tutored environment, so the process of learning can properly take place.
